Biotic Earth Black Case Studies Verdyol Biotic Earth Black

**NEW** Project in Minneapolis, MN - Minnehaha Park Slope Repair

Officials at the Minnehaha Falls Park in Minneapolis, MN were looking to vegetate a rip-rap lined channel for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Minnesota Native Landscapes, the contractor hired to complete the work, suggested using Biotic Earth Black as an alternative to importing topsoil.

**NEW** Project in Lafayette, Indiana - Veteran's Home

In the spring of 2011, officials at the Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette, IN decided to repair a severe slope failure that had occurred on the property. The slopes were so severe that there were safety concerns with placing and keeping topsoil on the slope.

Project in Calgary, Alberta - Canada Olympic Park

Calgary's Oanada Olympic Park parking lot across the Sports Hall of Fame building was experiencing large amounts of eroision causing etreme sediment washing onto the parking lot from heavy rainfall. Due to the degree of the slop, erosion control blankets were not an option, as there would be major disruption of any re-vegetation.

Project in Nevis, Minnesota

A residential house had been built and there was a significant hillside that had been removed to provide space for a driveway. After the excavation of the site, the homeowner had a slope that was composed of very fine sands that needed to be stabilized. The slope was so unstable and steep that traditional methods of placing topsoil were difficult to utilize.

Project in St. Cloud, Minnesota - Calvary Hill

The City of St Cloud, MN was having issues stabilizing a slope and maintaining good vegetation. They were also looking to establish a vegetated emergency access road to a pump station. The slope was reshaped, and a retaining wall was installed to help mitigate some grade issues. They wanted to reinforce the slope in order that mowing equipment would not cause damage to the slope.

Project in Central Iowa

Biotic Earth Black was chosen as an alternative to importing top soil for a project in central Iowa. As this was a new alternative, the inspectors allowed Biotic Earth to be sprayed on one half of the channel, and traditional soil filling techniques on the other half.

Project near Aurora, Nebraska

During construction on a project, much or all of the topsoil from a location is often removed leaving extremely poor subsoils exposed that are devoid of organics, nutrients and pore space thus not allowing water and air migration within the soil. This was exactly the case for an area of road construction just outside Aurora, Nebraska for the Nebraska Department of Roads. The topsoil on this site had been removed during the road construction leaving a large area of exposed subsoils. On numerous attempts the contractor had tried to reestablish vegetation using just erosion control measures to no avail. The site would not vegetate! Worse yet, the soil was a highly erosive loess material composed of high silt content that had little nutrient holding capacity.

Biotic Earth Black was selected for use to show its overall ability to assist in the revegetation efforts for the Nebraska Department of Roads. Read more >>

Vidir Road

Problem: A road had slumped and was originally repaired using a 2 foot layer of limestone. The fines in the crushed limestone however, would erode, affecting the Icelandic River, 1 mile away. Read more >>

White Rock

Problem: Very sparse vegetation on a city owned property due to poor soil. Result: Within two months, the Biotic Earth Black proprietary blend of peat, straw, flax, mycorrhizae and micro and macro nutrients and growth stimulants helps give the poor subsoil a new biotic layer that help to establish new vegetation as well as helping the existing vegetation flourish. Milner Ridge

Waste water treatment ponds for the provincial medium security jail. 70,000 m2 of slopes and channels to protect. Results: Vegetation was established over 96% of the entire site and no erosion occurred on the main structure. The project was a success, vegetation established to prevent erosion and secure the lagoon structure. Read more >>

Manitoba Floodway

After hearing of the Milner Ridge success, Manitoba Floodway decided to try it. Hauling topsoil was costly and if Biotic Earth hydroseeding worked, it would save $30,000 per hectare. Watch the video>>

Project in New Brunswick, Canada

Project: Equipment rental location with 2,000 m2 of erodible slopes with very poor soils to vegetate.

Challenge: To establish vegetation and prevent erosion on parking lot and storage area perimeter slopes. The subsoil is mostly gravel. Adding topsoil was not an option.

Biotic Earth Green Case Studies Verdyol Biotic Earth HGM

**NEW** Colorado Department of Transportation

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) had a primary goal to reduce their financial demands of placing topsoil on their highway projects.

By only adding what is needed, the Biotic Earth soil building system mimics Mother Nature and can significantly reduce costs while ensuring effective vegetation establishment and long-term vegetation sustainability, for the ultimate goal of long-term erosion control.

The use of the Biotic Earth system would afford CDOT to potentially result in huge financial savings on future projects, but first the materials must be tested to prove their effectiveness.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

At just above 8000 feet, a local rancher was conducting extensive rebuilding of his fence line on his 60,000 acre ranch. The fence line was constructed on a variety of slopes and the cut and fill slopes created by the fencing further exacerbated the erosion potential due to the extreme gradients along with the natural terrain’s own erosion enhancing conditions like the steep grades, rocky poor soils, and slope aspects. Hydro Quebec
In 2004, Hydro Quebec worked with Verdyol to combine peat moss with their wheat based straw mulch to help reclaim road sides that were being built on their northern construction sites near James Bay. This project was located in the Northern Boreal forest where salvaging topsoil was impossible, and there was no topsoil to import. The goal was to establish vegetation within one season and make it sustainable without the use of topsoil. Read more>>

Parachute, Colorado
Parachute, Colorado is located at 5000 ft. elevation and receives about 13 inches of precipitation a year, about half what the average is for the entire United States. Being at this elevation with limited humidity and high UV intensity creates an excellent proving ground for any product’s ability to establish vegetation and the overall ruggedness of the product. See how Biotic Earth HGM helped>>

Biotic Earth BFM Case Studies

Terra Nova, Ontario, Canada

Challenge: Very steep hills with a very sandy soil, Difficult to widen road without large amount of excavation. Some of the slopes are 1:1 and 70 feet in height.

Solution: Dol Hydroseeding proposed a two step approach. First step is to apply Biotic Earth BFM at a rate of 3500lbs per acre to add the organic amendment to the soil. Second step is to apply Soil Guard over top at a rate of 4000lbs per acre. This two step approach was necessary given the very sandy material and the steep slopes. Erosion Control Blankets where not feasible in this situation because of the steep conditions and loose material. Read more >>

HYDROGOLD Case Studies

Barrie Ontario

Project: Big box store development (Lowes, Royal Bank, Zephyrs Grocery) Results: In less than 3 weeks and after two 1 inch intense rains the mulch held the erosion and a consistent stand of grass grew. Read more>>

"Mark, I have been using your product since we met at the show in Calgary a few years ago. I love it and use all the time. ...there is nothing else like it. For jobs where I use it to replace soil, it’s very cost effective and an easy sell. I try to use it on almost all of my hydroseeding jobs because the results are so good. I have developed an entire niche service around it that no one else does. My new unit works with it flawlessly. Keep up the good work."
